Warm Up For The Conference

This one-day comprehensive course will provide basic knowledge about the care of the individual with spinal cord injury or impairment (SCI). It is designed to increase the participant’s competence in any work setting.

Course Objectives

  • Discussion of the types of SCI including classification, level, severity, and mechanism of injury.
  • Identification of the major multi-system effects of SCI and their management using accepted clinical guidelines.
  • Exploration of the educational resources for SCI directed at promoting, maintaining, and restoring health in individuals with SCI.

Content (6.5 Contact Hours)

  • Introduction to SCI: Impact to Anatomy and Physiology.
  • Skin: Keys to Success.
  • Bladder and Bowel Control: A Never Ending Story.
  • Cardiovascular Review: The Heart of it All.
  • Pulmonary Management of the SCI Population: Atelectasis, Ventilators, PEs, and Beyond
  • Neuro/Muscloskeletal Changes, Pain, and Spasticity in SCI.

Target Audience

RNs, LPN/LVNs new to SCI nursing working on rehabilitation units or VA SCI centers.

RNs, LPN/LVNs working in medical/surgical, critical care, long term care, case management, outpatient clinics, or health care settings who regularly come in contact with patients with SCI.

  Social workers, occupational therapists, physical therapists, kinesiotherapists, recreation therapists, or other members of the interdisciplinary team who work with patients with SCI and would benefit from increased understanding of their unique bio-psycho-social issues
 

This course is offered by The American Association of Spinal Cord Injury Nurses (AASCIN).
